Luang Por
Bunmee is the abbot of Wat Tham Tao (turtle cave temple), northeast Thailand,
is a meditation master of the Thai forest tradition founded by Luang Por Mun (1870 – 1949). The forest tradition
emphasizes strict observance of the monks' discipline, ascetic practices and
intensive meditation with the objective of liberation from suffering.
Ordained at
the age of 20, he has been a monk for the past 46 years. As a young monk, he was personally trained
under Luang Por Kien and Luangta Maha Bua, both eminent disciples of Luang Por
Mun. In particular Luangta Maha
Bua, (1913 - 2011) one of the most popular and well respected Monk in
contemporary Thailand, widely known for his meditation skills, Dhamma teachings
and community service.
Luang Por
Bunmee teaches meditation and Dhamma to the monastic community. His monastery covers 1,208 acres of serene
forest sanctuary and it has basic structures that can accommodate up to 40
monks. Luang Por also receives frequent invitations to teach lay-people in both private
and public institutions. In addition, he
involved in community service, most notably the 2011 Thailand flood relief,
which was the worst flood the country has seen in the last 50 years.
